Back in August of 2010, I joined the Song A Week Social Group sponsored by the Mandolin Cafe. The idea was to get back into playing the mandolin after a break of a few years from playing. The idea was a good one with lots of extra benefits and not just to my playing which had slipped a few notches due to the lack of attention to it on my part. Soon, I was posting my videos of the "Song of the Week" with the best of them. Lots of fun and lots of learning.

Michael lives in California.
Pretty soon I started to notice and come to "know" many of the regular contributors to the Song A Week Social Group. Having always played in a band, and being band less at the moment, I approached a few of the members via email to see if we could put together some songs via the Internet. That is, sending our individual tracks back and forth and then mixing them into some sort of finished song. These early efforts at long distance recording were fun and educational. I did some tracks with Old Sausage (David Mold), John Kelly (from Scotland) and Tosh (from England). These players were all fellow members of the SAW social group.

Marcy & Jeff from Tennessee.
It was when I asked Marcy and her husband, Jeff, that the idea for the Saw Mountain String Band began to form. All three of us have a love of old time string band music and the patience to work together in this strange way of recording. We began to work on songs and the months flew by as we finished song after song. Pictured above is our first CD collection of songs and tunes which we finished recording after a year's work in January 2014. We have since begun to work on another collection of songs and tunes.

Marcy sings like an angel and plays fiddle, mandolin, jaw's harp, & harmonica. Jeff plays the claw hammer banjo, upright bass and can sing. Michael (that's me) plays the mandolin, guitar, claw hammer banjo and electric bass. I also sing. Together we make up the Saw Mountain String Band.
